It is with great enthusiasm that we send out this newsletter and a personal invite to the 2024 edition of the Orange Descent Canoe Marathon and now the SA K1 River Champs for 2024.
For those fortunate paddlers that make their yearly pilgrimage to the Northern Cape and fell in love with the race, the river and the Green Kalahari, 2024 is your year to tick off this bucket-list race and get your must loved official Race Cap.

Travel to Upington
The Orange Descent is one of the most central races for all unions. Fill your vehicle with all your best mates or advertise a free seat in your vehicle if you are traveling alone. We know traveling cost is one of the major obstacles, and we are comitted to find ways to make the race accessible to everyone. Visit our website to advertise a free spot.
Registration at
Orange River Cellars
Our yearly registration takes place at the Tasting Room of Orange River Cellars where you can enjoy our local wines, desert wines,
brandy, craft beer, etc.
The restaurant also offers great value for money local cuisine.
Sundowner River Cruise
After registration everyone is invited to join us on Sakkie se Arkie a unique tourist attraction in Upington. The boat is equipped with a bar and serves drinks, cocktails and snacks as you enjoy the sunset over the Orange River
Ample Accommodation
The official race venue and accommodation at Oranje Rus Resort. It has great camping facilities and chalets. This is also where all the evening entertainment will happen!
Upington has no shortage of accommodation from countless hotels, B&B and camping options.

Day 1
Day 1 will start at Die Punt Resort, Keimoes and finish 26km down stream at Die Mas Resort, Kakamas. This day takes you through the most breathtaking piece of river, with great Neus Gorge rapids and exciting river racing.
Unique Canal Section
The Orange Descent is probably the only race where you get to paddle a 3km section in a fast flowing irrigation canal before you get back into the river.
Augrabies Falls
National Park
With the shorter (26km) manageable days it leaves you with the afternoon free to visit one of our regions great wonders, the Augrabies Falls which is a meer 35min drive from the finish of day one. This is an absolute must see!
Saturday Evening
Lounge
When the dust has settled after a day of exciting river racing you will be treated to a relaxation evening lounge at Oranje Rus Resort. With music, food, drinks and watching video footage of the days action at the rapids, while the sun sets over the Orange River.
Day 2
Day 2 will start at Sakkie se Arkie, Upington and finish 28km down stream at Oranje Rus, Kanoneiland. With some challenging rapid for the first 7km the river widens and becomes ideal for tactical river racing with some channel and faster line options.

After two days of great river racing we end of the event with a special price giving ceremony that acknowledges all the age group winners and celebrates the newly crowned SA K1 River Champions for 2024. Not to mention the generous PRICE MONEY on offer to the winners.
